Run-off Election for Liberian Presidency
Run-off Election for Liberian Presidency
Liberia's Presidential Run Off on November 8th was declared free and fair and transparent by international observers despite previous claims of fraud in the first round made by one of the parties competing in the presidential race, leading to their call to boycott the polls. UN police and military were on hand to assist in creating a peaceful environment for Liberians to go to the polls on that day. UN personnel were on the ground and in the air. International Observers from the Economic Community of West African States, who are tasked with monitoring the elections, noted that low voter turn out was troubling. SOUNDBITE (ENGLISH) Professor Attahiru Jega, President of ECOWAS 200-member Election Observation Mission to Liberia, and Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of Nigeria: "Low voter turnout characterized early voting even though the crowd gradually improved during the course of the day......Despite these findings, voter turn out remained a concern. While it increased during the course of voting, it seems relatively low compared to the first round." On polling day, the Coordinator of the United Nations in Liberia, Ellen Margrethe Løj visited polling stations in Monrovia and outlying areas. The UN envoy also visited with the UNMIL troops securing the perimeters of the offices of the Congress for Democratic Change, or CDC, where the day before there had been clashes between CDC supporters and Liberian law enforcement personnel. CDC rally turns violent in Liberia
CDC rally turns violent in Liberia
I filmed this footage with my point-and-shoot camera during the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) rally November 7th, 2011. The rally took place despite no permit from the Ministry of Justice, and the end of the campaign season the day before. CDC supporters gathered near the party's headquarters and were met with a national police and UN peacekeeper blockade. I was able to get close to the scene because I am an international observer. I shot this between 12:30 and 1:30pm. This is a very basic video of what took place that was all I could manage using my dinky camera. The national police were using live ammunition and there have been 5 confirmed deaths as a result of the clashes. The run-off presidential election is still scheduled for November 8th, 2011, despite the violence and ongoing instability in the capital. (I apologize for the background conversation and occasional cursing - this was my first time filming in the midst of a riot)

UNMIL Radio hosts the International Children's Day of Broadcasting, 2012
The International Children's Day of Broadcasting (ICDB) was launched by UNICEF in 1991 in order to encourage broadcasters worldwide to create awareness for children issues. ICDB, celebrated for sixteen years on the first Sunday in December, was a day when broadcasters around the world "Tuned in to Kids". Broadcasters would air quality programming for and about children. Over the years, children's participation became a keystone of the ICDB. Broadcasters began to allow children to be part of the programming process, to talk about their hopes and dreams and share information with their peers. [Source: UNICEF website] This year, UNMIL Radio hosted ICDB events on March 4. As part of the traditional activities on this day, UNMIL Radio gave the children the opportunity to organize radio programs and activities conducted by, for and about them. They were in charge of the air waves of UNMIL Radio, for 10 hours starting from 6 am to 4 pm In a range of activities on that day, the children broadcast programmes in various formats focusing on the theme of the day, acting as presenters, producers, reporters, and duty-continuity announcers. Four of the child broadcasters conducted a special interview with President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf. They also broadcast live from Old Road in Montserrado. Numerous programmes were sent in by children living in various counties in Liberia. [Source: "Daily Observer," Liberia, 7 March 2012]

Musique: Sanctus Pachelbel Chorale Soprano Boys Choir.

JR - EXTRAIT "WOMEN ARE HEROES", Kibera, Kenya
JR - EXTRAIT "WOMEN ARE HEROES", Kibera, Kenya

PITN - Fractals: The Intelligence of God's Design
PITN - Fractals: The Intelligence of God's Design
"Fractals" are designs derived from a mathematical discipline that produces images. This word was coined by the French theorist Benoit Mandelbrot in 1975, and was used to describe the bizarre configurations that emerged from his unique mathematical analysis of the physical world. In that year, he revolutionized the way that science looks at a landscape. Two years later, he published the landmark Fractals: Form, Chance and Dimension. What is a fractal? The Oxford American Dictionary calls it "a curve or geometric figure, each part of which has the same character as the whole. Fractals are useful in modeling structures (such as eroded coastlines or snowflakes) in which similar patterns recur at progressively smaller scales, and in describing partly random or chaotic phenomena such as crystal growth, fluid turbulence, and galaxy formation." The word itself is derived from French, and the Latin fract, meaning "broken." Observe that in the above definition, everything from crystals to galaxies can be described by fractal geometry. Large structures can be broken down into smaller and smaller ones, ad infinitum. Likewise, small structures can be expanded into larger ones into infinity. The Encarta World English Dictionary says the following: "frac·tal n an irregular or fragmented geometric shape that can be repeatedly subdivided into parts, each of which is a smaller copy of the whole. Fractals are used in computer modeling of natural structures that do not have simple ...
